Green Events and Weddings

What is a green or eco-chic wedding?

In Las Vegas, most use soy based inks on recycled paper, organic food and wine, wedding favors of live plants or seed packets, organically grown flowers, second hand wedding dresses or made from hemp silk or organic cotton, daytime weddings to conserve electricity,  mountains, outdoors with solar powered lights, website to convey wedding announcements, limiting the size of the wedding, purchasing carbon credits or donating to a charity in lieu of gifts, elimination of the bridal bouquet, recyclable disposal dishes or candles as centerpieces..

Most women expect their wedding day to be the highlight of their life.  They have dreamt of this day since childhood. Their concern for the environment can impede some of their visions of this special day.

Outdoor weddings can be problematic as there is no assurance of weather conditions, mountain services can create health concerns from the foliage, especially terpines from the pine trees and other inhalant allergies.  Landscaping normal maintenance protocols predominately involve chemicals that can be absorbed by the guests, that can preclude a reception on a golf course, etc.

Most prefer that their reception be in the evening, which would require the utilization of electricity, which can be accomplished with energy efficient venues that are LEED certified. Hotel accommodations for out of town guests, who are green minded, can be an issue as there is a lot of greenwashing in Las Vegas. To conserve gas it is advisable to have the guests stay at the venue where the function is to be held.

Food is always difficult as cost is a major factor, should it be sit down or buffet, lifestyle choices of vegan, vegetarian, food allergies have to also be considered. Not all venues will have organic food and wines available nor will they be amenable to purchasing food outside of their normal inventory. Will your venue purchase biodegradable dinnerware? Certain concessions might have to be made in trying to have a green eco-chic wedding.  How much of a compromise do you want to make in the theme of "green"?

Energy credits and donations to charities are an excellent idea for those who are not just starting out.  Most brides tend to register at department stores to obtain the items they need to start their home. Prior to the actual wedding there are the engagement parties and bridal showers. It is a long held tradition that the bride and groom receive monetary gifts at the wedding reception.  This is expected to give them a "boost" into their new life together, along with offsetting some of the costs associated with the reception. Second marriages are usually with couples who are established, settled in their lives, therefore, energy credits and charitable donations would be more appreciated.

Centerpieces are traditionally flowers, which even if organic, can be a health issue and should be eliminated along with live plants as wedding favors.  There are centerpieces that can be rented or created with non-live floral arrangements.  Candles should not be used even if made of beeswax, as the fumes from even non-lead wicks will create health issues to some of the guests along with polluting the indoor air environment.

The NTEF is extremely concerned about the health of the wedding party and guests.  Therefore, our main concentration will be with the greening of the indoor environment for the function. We will not recommend any venue that we feel does not fit our criteria of green, that includes any venue that introduces anything but pure outside air into the building.  We will not use any centerpieces that can introduce any form of an odor or fragrance into the venue. We will not recommend any supplier who uses artificially scented linens.

We believe in truly green and healthy indoor air quality. We are highly qualified to determine what will be the healthier alternative for all concerned. We are concerned that guests do not have to feel that they have to go outside for the ever constant "breath of fresh air". If the indoor air quality is not appropriate for those with respiratory health issues and environmentally mediated hypersensitivities, then it is not acceptable for everyone else.

We have health care professionals, who are working with us, who know what green and environmentally safer is, does yours?

We may make some recommendation that do not epitomize green as commonly thought, but, we strive to make sure everyone has a healthy and uneventful time on your special day. Green should not only concentrate on energy and renewable resources, your health is the most precious renewable resource there is and everything should be centered around that.

"Every breath you take, has an impact upon your health"-NTEF
